8. Stone Henge

“Look up to the left among the trunks and branches of tall trees…, and see, on the summit of this high knoll, how weird appear these huge upright stones standing like palisades, and there like solitary sentinels guarding some mysterious spot.”

Downing wound the carriage trail tightly around this rocky knoll. Today, the stones are overturned and scattered about the base. Some of these stones are inscribed “Whitehouse”, the name of the family that owned Springside after Vassar’s death.
