28. Jet Vale

“This walk…leads out by a flower-vase to the head of Jet Vale Path by which we will go down to one of the most secluded and beautiful places in Springside. Here, between the Ever-green Parks and Maple Hill, the water that flows down from Willow Spring leaps up from the mouth of an image of a fluttering swan, and, falling in drops and spray, forms a sparkling pool around it.”

— Benson J. Lossing, Vassar College and Its Founder, 1867

The form of the swan is indicative of a ‘beautiful’ landscape element as described by Downing. The water for the fountain at Jet Vale was gravity fed from Willow Spring. Recent archeology in the area is attempting to determine the location of the fountain for interpretation and restoration. In the engraving of Jet Vale Fountain, Summer House Hill is depicted in the distance. Walk back toward the Kiosk across the road, and take the path up to Summer House Hill.
