26. Willow Spring

“…see how grandly this giant sycamore – one of the primitive sons of the forest – rises above the surrounding trees, and spreads its sheltering branches over the spring at the foot. In this overshadowing, it is assisted by an ancient willow, on the other side of the spring that bubbles up in copious measure beneath that arch of masonry, on which reposes an iron image of a watch-dog.”

— Benson J. Lossing, Vassar College and Its Founder, 1867

Willow Spring is the fresh water spring that gives the site its name. The sycamore pictured in the engraving is still living, but the willow is gone. Later owners replaced the watchdog statue atop the springhouse with a marble maiden. The concrete-lined pond and stream are 20th century additions made by later owners. The stone springhouse was repaired in 2012.
