The Conservatory and Gardener’s Cottage

WALKING TOUR

21. CONSERVATORY & GARDENER'S COTTAGE

“…we will pass on to the Grapery and Greenhouse grounds and the Gardener’s cottage.”

— Benson J. Lossing, Vassar College and Its Founder, 1867

To the north on higher ground, once stood a second gardener’s cottage and a glass conservatory for plant collections and grapes.

“How pleasantly the grounds open before us on that gentle slope on which the Conservatory stands with its crystal roofs, covering in Winter clusters of luscious grapes, many rare and exotics, and domestic flowering shrubs and plants in great abundance.”

— Benson J. Lossing, Vassar College and Its Founder, 1867
