20. VASSAR'S (GARDENER'S) COTTAGE

“At the pretty Cottage we are sure of a cordial welcome.”

— Benson J. Lossing, Vassar College and Its Founder, 1867

Vassar and his wife lived in the Gardener’s Cottage, adding a wing where the farm manager and his wife, the housekeeper, lived. Downing designed the cottage to work with the topography and set it into the knoll. Still visible are the arcade columns which once supported the long first floor verandah of Vassar’s Cottage. In 1976, the cottage façade was saved from impending demolition and is now on display at the State Museum in Albany.
