2. Duck Pond

“Let us…follow this little path to the left, and up to the head of the gourd-shaped lakelet near the Lodge…. This is a cool retreat at the foot of Maple Hill.”

— Benson J. Lossing, Vassar College and Its Founder, 1867

What is now a modern roadway and parking area was once a duck pond with a footbridge and breeding-house for the water-fowl, an important scenic element of the gatehouse composition. Downing felt that the simplest view was enlivened by the presence of water. Of all water features, he considered a lake or pond the most beautiful.
