WALKING TOUR

1. PORTER'S LODGE & GATES

“...here is the south entrance to Springside, with the Porter’s Lodge…. How pleasant is this broad, gravely road, leading…into the most welcome shade!”

— Benson J. Lossing, Vassar College and Its Founder, 1867

This charming composition of Gothic Revival cottage and curving wall offered 19th century visitors an enticing promise of the beauty waiting within Springside. The Porter’s Lodge and Gates, with the original sandstone walls and wrought-iron gates, are the only remaining structures and represent Downing’s sole surviving work of architecture, although his partner at the time, Calvert Vaux probably contributed to the building’s design. The Porter’s Lodge was restored to its original 1851 color scheme in 2000. It was designated a local landmark in January 2005.
