The land that now comprises Springside is part of the homelands of the Munsee Lenape, Indigenous peoples who have an enduring connection to this place.
Springside friends please take note of the Autumn 2021 edition of the Hudson River Valley Review, Marist College’s journal of regional studies. This edition includes seven essays celebrating the life and work of the late David Schuyler, Andrew Jackson Downing scholar, whose biography of Downing, Apostle of Taste, has been the definitive biography of Downing for years.
Also included in this issue are stories about the D&H Canal, as well as an article on two ambitious mayors in Poughkeepsie during the Gilded Age.
Springside is pleased to be able to make the Review available on our website through a partnership with the Hudson River Valley Institute at Marist College.
In addition to this trove of Americana is an essay on Springside by Harvey Flad, professor emeritus at Vassar College and a former Springside board member. Professor Flad's essay, Saving Springside: Preserving Andrew Jackson Downing’s Last Landscape is a thorough account of how SLR came to be and why A.J Downing is so important in American history and the history of landscape design.
