Andrew Jackson Downing and the Development of Landscape Design in America
Date: Sunday, March 15 2015
Time: 1pm – 3pm
Hudson Valley Garden Association is excited to host the first annual HVGA Garden Community Lecture in celebration of one of our nation’s earliest and most celebrated landscape designers, Newburgh-native Andrew Jackson Downing, and his 200th birthday in 2015.
We welcome who will present “From Landscape Gardener to Landscape Architect: Andrew Jackson Downing and the Development of Landscape Design in America.”
Dr. Harvey K. Flad will review the life and work of Andrew Jackson Downing (1815-1852) and his 1841 Treatise on Landscape Gardening in North America. Downing’s gardening principles integrated the picturesque and the beautiful to domesticate the American home. We will examine “Springside,” the summer home of Matthew Vassar across Route 9 from Locust Grove, as a fully documented National Historic Landmark Downing landscape.
Refreshments to follow.
Pre-registration is required. Seating is limited, please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you RSVP but are unable to attend.
