29. Summer House Hill

“Through the interlacing branches where the golden sunlight is playing, we have glimpses of the Summer-house on the little hill by the highway around which Summit Avenue passes….”

— Benson J. Lossing, Vassar College and Its Founder, 1867

Although the pleasure grounds are celebrated for their intimate interior views, Downing designed this knoll, with an open-air summer house or pavilion, to provide a view looking out over the Hudson River and to the western hills. Proceed back down the hill:

“…to South Avenue and the portal, and go out into the highway homeward bound, with the treasures of the delightful experience of a summer evening ramble in SPRINGSIDE.”

— Benson J. Lossing, Vassar College and Its Founder, 1867
