23. Center Circle

“The Circle is hemmed in by rows and groups of evergreen and deciduous trees, and above these tower loftily a large oak and two huge black-walnut trees. In the center is a jet of water, falling into two basins and a pool, one above the other, in sparkling cascades. Around these are vases filled with flowers.”

— Benson J. Lossing, Vassar College and Its Founder, 1867

This circular meadow remains one of the most striking open spaces in Downing’s design. Prior to the fountain, a small domed conservatory stood on the same location.
