WALKING TOUR

14. COACH HOUSE & ICE HOUSE

The coach house included space for four carriages, a harness room, stable, tool house, workshop, and hayloft. Downing designed this building with a lower farmyard entrance and an upper coach house entrance at the top of the hill above you. Next to the coach house was an ice house and dairy room, which had its own specially-designed shelving for cooling milk. From the upper level, only the roof and gable end were visible giving the building the appearance of an “A-frame” structure. Arson destroyed the farm complex in 1969. Today, the rear stone foundation walls remain.
