7. Rock Roost

“A short spur trail circumvents a rocky outcrop of impressive scale…a rough mass of slate rock twenty or thirty feet in height, with a dip of forty-five degrees, covered chiefly with oaks, and crowned by a single cedar tree.”

The rugged rock outcropping of this feature is a clear expression of a ‘picturesque’ landscape element described by Downing. The single cedar is gone, but Rock Roost remains one of Springside’s most dramatic landforms covered with oaks, tulip poplars, and maples.
