6. Group Gap

“…let us…see what is here on the right of the Avenue. It is a gentler knoll, covered with the forest trees: and between it and Rock Roost is a wild, shaded hollow, called Group Gap.”

Group Gap typifies the way Downing used the site’s existing rugged topography. He placed narrow trails between the knolls and through the hollows enhancing the wildness of the site particularly for those on foot. Take the footpath through the “gap” between the knolls and around the base of Rock Roost.
